Edinburgh, Scotland Holidays

Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, is one of the world’s most picturesque cities and a hotspot for holidaymakers who are attracted by its history, architecture, rich culture and surrounding countryside.

Edinburgh attractions

Home to over 4,500 listed buildings, Edinburgh has World Heritage Site status. The city is unique in that it offers tourists a mix of opposing architectural styles in the form of its medieval Old Town, which includes Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile, alongside the neoclassical style of the 18th century’s New Town.

As well as impressive architecture, Edinburgh is renowned for its great literary culture and this has led to the city being named as the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature. Take in one of the city’s literary tours to see the former home of Robert Louis Stevenson or to follow in the footsteps of Robert Burns or see the streets and sights that have inspired modern writers such as JK Rowling and Ian Rankin.

The city also has much to offer holidaymakers in the way of nightlife – there are over 400 pubs – dining and shopping. Princes Street is the main shopping area, well known for its single-sided street of shops facing the gardens, which are set against a magnificent backdrop of the Castle.

If you prefer a round of golf to a shopping spree then the ‘home of golf’ − St Andrews – is only 50 miles to the north east of Edinburgh and worth a visit. The small town is also home to Scotland’s oldest university which just happens to be the meeting place of Prince William and Kate Middleton, now better known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Edinburgh Festival

Edinburgh Festival is the largest cultural event in the world; over 1.7 million visitors descend on the city every August to take in the many arts and cultural festivals that take place simultaneously.

Festivals continue to take place throughout the year in Edinburgh with performances and events taking place in the city’s many theatres, museums and galleries, as well as on the streets.

Edinburgh holiday rentals

You could think that finding a great holiday rental in Edinburgh would be difficult during the Festival and at Hogmanay when demand for accommodation is exceptionally high, but the city boasts a limitless supply of holiday homes and apartments to rent.

Whether you are looking to rent a 5-star luxury apartment right in the heart of the city centre or a cosy cottage close to the coast, Edinburgh to suit really does offer a holiday let to suit everyone.

Edinburgh flights

With direct air links to the UK, Europe, America and beyond, Edinburgh city region is one of the best connected areas of Scotland.

The express train link between Glasgow and Edinburgh serves commuters from either city in less than one hour, whilst the M8 motorway transports commuters in approximately 50 minutes.
