The village of Pevensey is situated in East Sussex, five miles north east of the popular seaside resort of Eastbourne. Pevensey Bay, which lies about a mile away from the village, is a half shingle, half sand beach that has been described as ‘a seaside resort in miniature’.
Pevensey and Pevensey Bay are steeped in history; one of the area’s most famous landmarks, Pevensey Castle, can be traced back over 16 centuries. Built as a Roman fort in the 4th Century, it later became the landing place for William the Conqueror’s invading army in 1066 and it assisted in defending England up until as recently as 1942 when it was used as a look-out post for enemy aircraft crossing the Channel during World War 2.
As well as being a significant historical site, Pevensey Castle also offers some pretty views of the surrounding areas. To the South of the Castle, you can see the Martello Towers which were built along the coastline in the early 1800s, while to the West there are views of the beautiful South Downs and Eastbourne.
For more history and a fascinating insight into crime and punishment in England over the centuries, visit Pevensey Courthouse Museum and Jail. Built in 1542, this grade 2 listed building was used as Pevensey’s jail, court and Tudor town hall up until 1886.
The shingle beach and flat sands at low tide at Pevensey Bay make it an ideal spot for sunbathing, swimming and windsurfing. The area remains largely unspoilt and it is less crowded than larger resorts, making it a popular summer holiday destination, especially for families with young children.
Pevensey Bay is a short distance from Eastbourne’s Sovereign Harbour marina development. The Harbour’s Waterfront complex offers a wide selection of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops as well as some fantastic views of the marina.
There is no shortage of holiday accommodation to choose from in Pevensey Bay and the surrounding areas. Choose from guest houses and luxury hotels through to traditional seaside B&Bs and caravans. Or for an unforgettable holiday experience, rent a holiday home on the beach at Pevensey Bay and enjoy panoramic sea views from your own private deck. Depending on the season, a self-catering holiday can be one of the most cost effective ways of enjoying all that the South East coast has to offer.
