Scarborough, English Seaside Holidays

Scarborough is situated in North Yorkshire and is the largest seaside resort on the Yorkshire coast. In recent years, the town has undergone a significant renaissance which has resulted in the renovation of many classic Victorian buildings, such as the Rotunda Museum, as well as the development of cutting-edge contemporary architecture.

Scarborough attractions

The town boasts a rich architectural heritage, highlights of which include Scarborough Castle, a medieval quarter, Scarborough Harbour and some outstanding examples of Victorian architecture, such as the Spa Bridge and the Grand Hall at Scarborough Spa where the UK’s last remaining seaside orchestra, the Scarborough Spa Orchestra, still performs. The Hall plays host to a number of events throughout the year including the Scarborough Jazz Festival which takes place every September, attracting artists and jazz enthusiasts from all over the world.

With its museums, galleries, historic houses and sites, parks, such as Peasholm Park, and theatres, Scarborough is a real cultural gem. The renowned playwright, Alan Ayckbourn, is based in the town and almost all his plays have their first performance in the local Stephen Joseph Theatre.

Scarborough’s natural landscape of the moors and sea are the perfect setting for outdoor pursuits, providing plenty of opportunities for rock climbing, caving, mountain biking, boating, golf, abseiling and surfing.

The town’s North Bay beach now plays host to an annual Surf Festival where the UK’s professional surfers contest the third round of the UK Professional Surfing Title. Separated from North Bay by the Castle headland, South Bay beach gets busy during high season and is a particularly popular destination for families who are attracted by its family-friendly facilities.
